Mead Tasting

Our annual roundtable of meads will take place on Sunday, June 22, from 1 to 4 PM at the Home Wine, Beer, Cheese, and Meadmaking Shop in Woodland Hills. Both homemade meads and commercial meads (should there be any) are welcome. The tasting is well attended and it generally takes two 22 oz. or 750 ml bottles, or four 12-oz. bottles, to allow every one a small sample. Bring a suitable tasting glass such as a small wine glass or beer goblet.

Gulabi Kapla

I had a bottleneck in keg capacity, but I wanted to brew something, so I chose a lager. Since May was a few months away, I decided on a Maibock. Gulabi Kapla is a Pakastani Albino Goat, which seemed a fitting name for a "light" Bock.

Brew with a Falcon Day

When I was but a wee lad of a brewer I read ever brewing book that I could get my hands on just trying to get everything I could learn crammed into my head. I saw different configurations of systems and learned different techniques. From MB Raines, I learned the wisdom of prepping your yeast for their hard road ahead (seriously, a starter when I began in 1999 was still looked on as fussy and not really necessary). From Bruce Brode and Brian Vessa, I learned the power of a strange ingredient or two (Kix in this case).

2014 June Troubleshooter's Corner Notes

A return of notes!

These notes are a little scattered today as we didn't have a lot of time for Troubleshooter's and I forgot my notebook - so these are from memory. Brewers if I missed you - let me know and I'll be able to fill in my memory. The theme of today's tasting seemed to be "I'm not sure about what I made" which is different than "My beer sucks - help!"

Beer styles can develop rapidly and sometime the BJCP guidelines just can't keep up.  For this, and other reasons, the Maltose Falcons maintain their own beer style guidelines.  These are similar to the BCJP guidelines in breadth and specificty, but contain differences that should be followed by all judges that participate in our many annual competitions.

Well, another newsletter put to bed.  This issue includes a write-up of the very first all-female shop brew.  Lots of celebrities showed up to share in the shenanigans.  Also, Ethen Adams did an excellent write-up on the Falcon trip to Firestone-Walker to brew up one of our anniversary beers.  Drew waxes poetically on the wonders of mead, and the Phantom Brewer puts in an unexpected appearance.  Prost!
