So, what this story says is that LA Nightlife force Cedd Moses is planning a 17,000 square foot brewpub/pizza joint/skeeball alley on the first floor of the old Crazy Gideon's place in the Arts District downtown. He's getting the usual flack for it from neighbors, you know the types.
He and his 213 Nightlife group are responsible for many different, catchy bars downtown, including several bars that helped reinvigorate the craft cocktail scene. His mission is to provide a vital scene in Downtown LA, but I have to stop and wonder if this brewpub planning doesn't smell just like Wolfgang Puck's short lived brewpub of many, many years ago.
I could be completely wrong and be the sort of provincial knee jerk defensive sniffer type when I say things like this. Yes, I admit it's not unlike the holy than thou attitude copped by music fans upset over mainstream discovery of their beloved groups.Yes, I totally believe that they could pull this off like they have their other bars, but do I believe it'll be any good, from a beer perspective? No.
Most of what I've seen in the group's other beer menus makes me feel all meh about it. The lists aren't bad, but there's no whiff of the exotic or the excitement that clearly infuses the cocktail and whiskey programs at 213 Nightlife. All of that with one gleaming exception - The Golden Gopher. Maybe that's the ray of hope in this whole thing. Maybe that's the thing to hold onto in the face of all the other bars.
I want to be the biggest cheerleader of the good beer scene in LA and so, good luck to Mr. Moses and may good beer come to reign in LA.

Craft beer + skeeball, why didn't I think of that first!
