Falcon's Membership Meeting Minutes-March 2011

We missed you at the March meeting! Here is what you missed....

MALTOSE FALCONS MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES-MARCH 6, 2011

Today’s meeting was attended by about 40 people. A bit down from last month but a great time had by all.

GRAND HYDRO-BARLEYWINE SUPREME
Drew, our Grand Hydrometer got up from his sickbed and brought us a bevy of Barleywine to get the meeting going right. Tastings were comprised of:
Tenaya Creek Old Jackalope - 10.2%
Telegraph Rhino Rye - 9.8%
Alaskan Pilot Series - 10.7%
Shipyard Double Thumper - 11%
Port Brewing Old Viscosity - 10%
This was followed up by a homebrew called “Love to Grind Barleywine” made by Steve and Irene that rang in at a wonderful 11%.

AHA/SCHF BEERS NEEDED!
Drew will be putting a page up on the website regarding bringing your beers for both the SCHF and the AHA. Many of your best will be needed. Let’s show the crowds what an amazing homebrew club we are. If you have any questions, email Drew. We are arranging a grain buy for members only to be able to get 10 lbs of malt for free, but that beer MUST come to the club for festivals, etc. Drew will be putting this info online as well.
Even if you cannot make it to the events, PLEASE drop off your kegs to be taken to the fests. We will be posting more about this as the time comes closer.

BJCP EXAM
The BJCP information and sign-ups are now online at the website. The cost is $70.00. Spaces will fill up quickly, as the class is limited to 12 people + 6 alternates. The 1st class will commence at the shop on March 22nd and continue through May 17th, with the testing being on May 29th.

MERLIN CUP
Steve has posted information regarding the Merlin Cup on the website. Enter competitions and collect points! You will be awarded for your efforts when the winner is chosen.

CLUB ONLY COMPETITIONS
There are many AHA comps coming up and the Falcons need to be entering them. Our last competition yielded only two submissions. We have so many great brewers. Let’s get brewin and winnin! Bocks will be due in for judging at our April meeting. Steve went down the list of what other comps are coming up this year. We will try to get them on the website ASAP. You can look them up as well on the AHA website. They have a sidebar with the list.

SURFLINER COMP
Get them Adam biers together and let’s win this year’s Surfliner competition against the Santa Barbeerians! The judging will be in July and the comp in August. Sergei is spearheading this competition. Please contact him if you have any questions.

MAYFAIRE IS COMIN!
The Mayfaire will be here before ya know it. The schedule is:
Entries due: April 22nd
Judging: May 7th (and yes, we need you judges! See the Comp Committee to sign-on for judging)
Mayfaire: May 21st at Oak Park in Simi Valley. The activities director will be posting more info regarding camping, pricing, etc.

YOU TOO CAN SUBMIT TO THE BREWS AND NEWS
Hey Falcons! You all have brewing stories and recipes and I am sure some great photos (hey Anchor...) that would be great to submit to the Brews and News. Have a question about brewing? You can submit that as well for the “Ask the Brewer” column that will be starting up. Classified too! Please send the info to newsletter@maltosefalcons.com. We are still looking for things to be submitted by March 13th but please send in your stuff even if it is past that date. We want you to be part of the newsletter!

INSTRUCTORS WANTED
Heard of the Brew 101 classes? Attended any? This is a great learning experience and now you can pass on your knowledge. The Board would like to hear from those that would be interested in teaching the Brew 101 class. It only takes a few hours of your time and will be invaluable to someone who is just learning to brew. If you have any questions on what teaching would entail, please contact any of the Board members and they will be happy to answer you and set up a time for you to come and do a class.
