After the large turnout in our BJCP Judging Overview and Online Test Prep class in January, we decided to extend this year's program to include three additional tests to help prepare for the BJCP Tasting exams at that AHA's NHC in San Diego. This is the first in that series.
This class will cover the first third of the BJCP Style Guidelines:
1. LIGHT LAGER
2. PILSNER
3. EUROPEAN AMBER LAGER
4. DARK LAGER
5. BOCK
6. LIGHT HYBRID BEER
7. AMBER HYBRID BEER
8. ENGLISH PALE ALE
9. SCOTTISH AND IRISH ALE
We will review all of the styles in those categories and describe what makes them different, or similar. We'll review the vital statistics of them (OGs, FGs, ABVs, SRMs) and descibe what those acronyms mean! We'll have a broad series of beer tastings from many of the categories (though not all).
Please bring your own notepads for notes, and either a print copy of the BJCP Style Guideline (poor trees!) or a smartphone/tablet with the styles on it. We're gonna try to minimize the print copies so we can maximize the number of beer tastings.
In addition to reviewing the styles, we will be exploring many of the off-flavors in beers that judges look for. We'll have some samples of those, as well. Nothing gross, just enough so you can learn to look for that off-flavor. We'll talk about what causes them and suggestings that we can give to entrants to avoid making them.
Finally, we'll give you an opportunity to practive filling out score sheets. We'll do 2-3 over the course of the night, and the final one will be collected and you'll get feedback on the quality of the comments and judging that you provide. This is the same kind of evaluation that'll happen when you take the tasting exam itself, as is very helpful in preparation.
The price for the first class is $10, which offsets the costs of (limited) copies and tasting beers. The class limit is 25 people.

Look forward to the next class! The listing says Wednesday, Feb. 24, but that Wednesday is Feb. 25.
