Yahoo Finance create a list of beer brands that have suffered drastic sales slides since 2006.
Their sales analysis didn't include craft beers or the malternatvie segment, but instead looking at major brands. It is interesting to see that of all the brands to take a hit, the biggest percentage loss belongs to Michelob which from dropped from 2006's 500,000 barrels to 2011's 140,000 barrels or MGD with the biggest volume loss of 1.7 million barrels!

Enjoyed a wonderful Stone IPA. Called Enjoy by 12/21/12.
Not very bitter, it has a rich malt profile with an intense hop aroma and flavor.

Rocky and I have emptied our sour barrel and now have about 18 gallons of it. Seeing as we have so much of it we thought it would be fun to do a blend, using this beer as a base. I would like to invite any brewers with sour, funky, or unusual beers to participate. I would like to end up with 5 gallons of finished blend so we have enough to age and share. Please comment on this post if you are interested in participating. The way I see it, we should all meet up some where with at least a 22oz sample and go from there.

Count down to the holidays with a special calendar that reveals a different beer every day. The beer advent calendar adds a little mystery to your holiday drinking. There are 24 days in most advent calendars, but mine is 25 - because if there is any day when you're going to want a beer I think it would be the 25th.

Dearest Falcons!
I just wanted to thank each and everyone of you for taking the time to bring a toy to our 4th Annual Spark of Love Toy Drive. We collected 3 giant Hefty bags full of toys for the children. We delivered them to the Fire Department on Fallbrook. They were truly astounded to see how many toys we were unloading from the car. They asked us to thank all of you for your generosity.

Another great Falcon's party into the history books. There was great beer, great music and great friends.
I have had many a request for the mac&cheese recipe. Here it is:
Mac & Cheese
2 tbs butter
2 tbs flour
2 cup heavy cream
1 tsp Coleman’s dry mustard or 2 tsp Sierra Nevada mustard
1 or 2 bay leaf
salt & pepper
hot sauce (Tabasco, Frank’s, etc), to taste
2# cheese (sharp cheddar, gruyere, parmesan, mozzarella)

So I found a TON of ripe prickly pears by my friends house so I thought I'd put together a little how-to. Check out the pictures here

Why, one does a very berry melomel instead! No slaving over a hot mash tun or boil kettle. No worrysome timing of hop additions. Easy clean up and no disposal of spent grains. And best of all, no worrying about fermentation temperature. There's 6+ gallons of must in a plastic fermenter in my garage, happily bubbling away. The most difficult part of the entire process was dealing with all the bees that were attracted when I opened the pail of honey and decanted it to pour into the water.

Beard Beer: Rogue Ales Creates Brew Out Of Yeast From Brewmaster John Maier's Facial Hair
The Huffington Post | By Hilary Hanson Posted: 09/26/2012 3:56 pm EDT Updated: 09/26/2012 4:04 pm EDT
Beard yeast might sound icky at first, but it's really grown on one Oregon brewmaster.
Rogue Ales, a brewery and pub based in Newport, Ore., is developing an ale made out of yeast harvested from the beard of award-winning brewmaster John "More Hops" Maier.

As Drew told everyone at the last meeting, it is time to get your Anchor blurbs in, cause it is time for the Falcons to take back the Anchor Homebrew Club of the Year Award. What comps have you entered? What comps have you won in? What events did you volunteer at? Judge at? Steward at? What creative positive thing can you contribute to the Board so they can put together a report?

For those that are tired of scubbing out carboys and kegs by hand here is a fairly cheap solution. I cleaned 9 kegs in 45 minutes and only 2 needed a little elbow grease because they sat too long with yeast in them. I used 170 degree water and it was still hot when I was finished.
There is roughly $65 worth of parts in building this. If you have 5 gallon carboys you may want to replace the spray arm with copper to make it narrower to fit the neck.
Here is the parts list:
1- 1/6hp sump pump $50.00 delivered from Harbor Frieght (with 20% online coupon)

Quite a few folks took advantage of our Fresh Hop Buy and are getting their supplies starting real soon.
If you're a pro brewer - great! Just make sure you schedule your day and do that the right way, but us homebrewers don't really have that option. Why do we need to worry? Since the hops haven't been dried out, they carry a lot of water and as our produce drawers demonstrate time and time again - water + green stuff + time = ick. (In this case, mold) [ETA: Please note, I'm not talking long term storage with this - please use your hops in the near term. aka 2 weeks]

Here’s a familiar summertime scenario: after waiting a hot second in the buffet line, you’ve finally gotten your food and your drink and are ready to get your grub on when you realize there are no empty tables around. You could try to find a ledge somewhere, or maybe sit on the floor, but heavens, you’re not an animal.

Made these for our latest board meeting (hosts prepare dinner for the board) and they proved to be a big hit. The chicken tacos are a healthy and tastily juicy taco fodder. The Beef Chorizo tacos are actually two meals in one - day 1 - classic American pot roast with a little bit of flair - day 2 - meltingly awesome tacos.
All tacos served with pinto beans, onions, cilantro, lime, fresh queso and crema with warm tortillas and a choice of homemade pico de gallo, tomatillo salsa and guacamole..

I was looking for a way to rouse up my yeast in a conical fermenter. I thought of hooking up my C02 system, but I didn't want to unhook it from my system and thought it might be possible that wort might fall back into the line.
The solution for me was a Cornelius Keg Portable CO2 Charger. I had to find a 1/2" to 1/8" connector, which wasn't easy. I hooked it all up and shazzam, it worked!

Any Falcons attending this year? Ethen (another Falcon member) and I will be attending. Hopefully we can meet up with a few other members there. We'll make to sure to bring back a full report on this years festivities.
Cheers,

When you are retired, or even semi-retired, then you too can brew beer on a Monday. Today Rich and Old Jim are brewing up a Mild to bring to Sunfest. its going well so far, a tribute to our self control in terms of drinking while brewing. The wort is boiling now, with the first hop addition in and the timer counting. Old Jim is BBQing some nice sausages from Whole Foods and we'll be enjoying those along with some nice side dishes. We're going to be drinking Bear Republic Tribute Brown Ale with lunch. I'll post the recipe later, after the facts are in. And lucky us, Mrs. S.

It's election time coming up soon for the Maltose Falcons Board!!! Those of you who would like to serve are encouraged to start thinking about either being on the Board. Or nominating one of your fellow Falcons who you think would do a great job. Elections will be in September, so you have time to consider what position would suit you best or as I said before, another Falcon who you think could do a great job in any of the positions. Start thinking now Falcons!!!

A quick scienitific means of dealing with hangovers. Most of know this stuff, but it never hurts to repeat it!
So watch.. unless you like hangovers.. then you're strange!
