Since I blew off the November meeting, I'm in the dark about plans for a Stuffed Sandwich holiday tasting event.
Is we is, or is we isn't going to be at the Sandwich in December? If we is, when, pray tell?

Anchor Brewing announced at the California State Homebrew Competion at Stern Grove yesterday that the Maltose Falcons have been chosen as the 2010 Anchor Homebrew Club of the Year! Long time Falcon Steve Casselman was on hand to accept on the club's behalf, and drain a ceremonial mug of beer.

I've been fortunate enough to source honey from a local bee keeper at a great price and wanted to share with you guys. I can get raspberry, black button sage, and malibu wild flower honeys for $2/lb. I'd want to get every ones order in all at once so I don't have to bother him too much. Please post how much of which honeys you would like and I'll bring it to the next club meeting.

The very first beer award handed out at the GABF is the ProAm Competition and you know who just walked away with the Gold? Our friends and neighbors at Eagle Rock Brewery with their version of Donny Hummel's Red Velvet Imperial Rye Ale. And how was that recipe chosen? It was chosen because Donny won the Doug King Memorial back in January!

I've been making some minor system/process tweaks. One thing I've always disliked was my IC and how it sags letting the copper tubes touch and rest upon one another, effectively building a wall that the wort does not flow between. The whirlpool most likely didn't work as well as it should.

I went here during a business trip with my boss. If you come the wrong way on the road, you can easily miss the sign! The place is tucked into a tourist mall at the base of the mountain gondola and near the Nevada casinos, but the atmosphere is not touristy at all.

Now that the "baby" is 5 I am ready to get back into brewing. I am working towards brewing a batch of my award winning Hefe in a couple of weeks, but, in the mean time, as Xandra has shown an interest in all things science (including brewing) I am looking to figure out how best to brew some soda with her. We had some root beer extract stuff that was probably 5 years old, we mixed it with sugar and force carbonated in the keg....we want draft soda, but it didn't turn out as good as we would have liked. Anyway, I started doing some searching on how best to "brew" soda and decided that I s

I find myself in Solano county wanting dinner. I just came back from touring the Jelly Belly factory (what fun) and was looking for libation during the Lakers (Flakers) game. Accross the street from my hotel was a local brewpub called the Blue Frog. Why "the Blue Frog"? Apparently the founders/owners have been singing the Peter, Paul & Mary song since they were first married.
I'm in love with a big blue frog,
A big blue frog loves me.

This is my first year growing hops. Got Cascade, planted in a perforated bucket for drainage and crown control. They have a southerly exposure and are pretty much just rocking along right now.
I thought I'd share with you this pic. See the two black marks? That's one day's growth up the rope. Damn, these things grow faster than I did as a teenager!
I know, there's no sense of scale in this photo, but that's 3 inches of growth in 24 hours! (or about an 1/8 of an inch per hour!)

Attention Falcon beekepers!
A bee swarm is available NOW in West Covina. Bees have swarmed into a lemon tree in my mother in law's backyard. No image available at this time.
No, I'm not a beekeeper, yet, so don't give me the bees. But I would like to see these to go to a good home.
Contact me off line at schmitrw@earthlink.net or better yet at 818-261-6464 to work out logistics.

I saw this featured on "Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives" on Food Network. The restaurant is located at the marina in Long Beach. As its name suggests, it features beverages in 'schooner' glasses. While the bar is a prominent feature, the food here is very good!

Here is an announcement for a beer dinner next Sunday May 16th in Burbank at Ciao Cristina's owned by Falcon- Alan Donavan...
The featured brewery is Greene King Brewery from the UK, their most popular beer is Old Speckled Hen, Alan serves it on nitrogen. Head Brewer John Bexon will be there and I assume some of the brewery's other great beer offerings.

LONDON (Reuters Life!) - Mild beer, last in fashion when the Beatles were still at school, is making a comeback in Britain, according to a real ale lobby group.Responding to a growing number of requests from beer buffs, breweries are beginning to produce more Mild and pubs are finding demand for the dark, malty ale is rising.
In a survey of 500 real ale drinkers across the UK, the group found that 64 percent of them had seen an increase in the number of Mild beers served at pubs and beer festivals over the past 5 years.

Tony's Darts Away on 1710 Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank opened yesterday. They have 32 beers on tap, about half are IPA's and imperial IPA's, and gourmet sausages and other food to eat. The prices are amazingly low, they serve true pints, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the place was rocking last night. The owner Tony is a great guy who truly loves good beer, and he is a home brewer as well. Tony also loves the Falcons.

It was a gloomy and chilly morning yesterday, but the sun soon came out for the April club shop brew. It ended up becoming a beautiful day for brewing. My enthusiastic brew crew was raring to go. The team consisted of our President Steve Cook and his First Lady Irene, Ed Kochanowski, Tyler, Kris Schimdt, and myself. We had one no show, but Sean Fitzgerald from the shop was able to benefit from this brew day and get a portion of the wort.
