BJCP Mead Class and Exam

On Saturday, February 1, John Kaufman is going to be administrating a BJCP Mead Tasting Exam.  You don't need to be a beer judge to take it, as long as you pass the mead on-line entrance exam you can be a mead judge.

To help prepare people for the exam, we'll be conducting three Mead Judging classes at the Home Wine and Beer Shop.  All will be on Wednesday at 7PM and be on Jan. 8, Jan. 15, and Jan. 22.  John Kaufman, John Aitchison, and Roger Taylor will be leading the class--and we can promise you plenty of great and unusual meads in the process.

A Guide to Kveik Yeasts

Tasting the new hotness in yeast strains - the Norwegian Farmhouse Strains collectively known as Kveik

The new hotness in yeast is actually an old hotness in yeast. Thanks largely to the exploratory and documentary efforts of Lars M. Garshol, we've been reintroduced to traditional methods of Norweigan (and Baltic and Russian) homebrewing.

Drew's 45 IPA

Drew turned 45 and what better way to celebrate turning 45 than making a birthday brew. Together we created an IPA with a nominal starting gravity of 1.074 and 74 IBUs (to reflect Drew's 1974 birthday), the beer used 4 malts, 5 hops with 45% and 45% of the malts being two base malts. The hops include a special addition - hop terpenes of Citra and Columbus for the keg

FALCONRY & THE ORDER OF ST JOHN, the true tale of the MALTESE FALCON

In 1539, Charles V, co-King of Aragon, of which Sicily was a fiefdom and Malta a part, granted use of the island of Malta to the Knights.of the Order of St John along with the responsibility of garrisoning Tripoli. In exchange for this kindness, the knights offered to celebrate a daily mass for Charles. Or, in lieu of a mass, the emperor, an avid falconer, could elect to receive a prized falcon annually in tribute. He chose the falcon.
