March Club Brew Session - Dark Czech Lager with John A

Falcons, prepare yourselves for a very special Club Brew Session! This month, Co-Vice President and past President and the Falcons' unofficial lager Emperor John Aitchison will lead the crew in brewing a rare and delicious authentic Czech dark lager at his shop, Tavern Services, on Saturday, March 19. John has a smaller system than the club's system at the Home Beer Wine and Cheese Making Shop, so there are 5 slots open.

Club Shop Brew of 2/21/2016

So we set our mind on a hoppy American Amber. Initially at least. It turns out that it was too big to be called that, Imperial Red would be more accurate. However, the BJCP nor the Maltose Falcons style guidelines have such a style, it would fall in the American Strong Ale according to BJCP and Double IPA under Maltose Falcons definitions.

On with the story!

Saison Figolla

Continuing our newish tradition of creating a thank you beer for the judges of our Mayfaire competition - this year the club decided to make a Saison with a "Maltese" twist. This beer is based on an Easter Maltese dessert called figolla - a buttery citrus infused cake/cookie filled with marzipan. To make this Saison we're starting with a basic grain bill with a little "baked crust" of the biscuit. The aroma is boosted with the zest of lemon and Moro Blood Oranges (closer to an Italian/Maltese orange). We'll be adding almonds - details to follow! We're also happy to have some fun with this one and we'll be canning it via the Beer Monks Mobile Canning crew here in SoCal. (http://beermonks-socal.com/)

The Neighborhood Brewery: Three Weavers Brewing Co.

The Neighborhood Brewery By Bruce L. Brode I've been a homebrewer for more than 30 years. In that time, I have seen a revolution in beer continuing in many areas and ways, most recently in the area of craft breweries opening in the Los Angeles area. There were previous efforts – in the mid-1980s I remember the City of Angels brewpub in Santa Monica in the space long since occupied by Border Grill, which was funded by those who had made some good bucks in the “go-go” days of the stock market of the early-to-mid 1980s employed at the defunct Drexel Burnham Lambert investment house.

2016 Los Angeles Belgian Beer Challenge (LABBC)

Competition Format
Just to recap, the format for entering and judging beers in this competition is going to be the same as last year. Rather than judging Singles against Dubbel’s, Tripel’s and Dark Strongs, our competition judges each subcategory as if it were a category of its own. We want each subcategory to have a chance to compete in the best of show round against all other belgian styles so that we can truly crown the Best Belgian Brew of the year!

Hop Harvest Ale

For the September '15 shop brew session, I contacted a friend who had a small hop yard and he brought up a shipment of some dried and some freshly harvested hops to use for this brew. I created a recipe for a rich amber ale that uses these fresh hops in the finishing stages to maximize aroma contribution and because we didn't have lab numbers for alpha acids or cohumulone.
